If the macabre story of Diogo Alves, known as Portugal’s first “serial killer,” has already left you looking askance at Lisbon’s Águas Livres Aqueduct, get ready to lose sleep. The 19th-century Lisbon legend has just been given a new (and chilling) lease on life thanks to “Lisbon Noir,” a co-production between TVI and Amazon Prime Video.
Written and directed by Artur Ribeiro, the series premiered on April 13 and is keeping Portuguese viewers glued to their screens thanks to its irresistible blend of suspense, crime, and psychological thriller . Inspired by the sinister figure of Diogo Alves—whose decapitated head, preserved in formaldehyde, also appears in the series—the story moves between the present and the past.
What is the series actually about?

The mysterious fall of a Spanish diplomat from the top of Lisbon’s Águas Livres Aqueduct kicks off an investigation that is anything but simple. The apparent suicide quickly reveals a disturbing pattern: there is a new serial killer precisely replicating (in an almost ritualistic modus operandi ) the darkest crimes in the city’s history.
As the Judicial Police investigation, in collaboration with a Spanish inspector, progresses, the bodies begin to pile up, appearing in various iconic locations across the Portuguese capital. Lisbon is thus plunged into deep uncertainty and tension, where every iconic spot could be synonymous with real danger.
A star-studded cast
The cast of “Lisbon Noir” features some of Portugal’s top acting talent, such as Pêpê Rapazote ( as Inspector Daniel) and Beatriz Godinho ( who plays Inspector Laura). The police team gains strength (and a Spanish accent) with actress Mina El Hammani (the unforgettable Nadia from the global Netflix hit “Elite”).
In addition, other big names enrich the plot, such as Teresa Tavares, Paulo Pires, Luís Filipe Eusébio, and Cleo Diára, among others.
Where can you watch it?
If you’re in the mood to watch the series filmed in Lisbon, mark your calendar: the show airs weekly on TVI, but is also available on the Prime Video streaming platform.
Tip from Lisboa Secreta: while you wait for the next episode, take the opportunity to discover everything about the true story of the murderer Diogo Alves.
