The historic Tejo Lake has returned to Avenida da Liberdademore beautiful and “spruced up” than ever.
The iconic Lisbon lake, one of the capital’s most emblematic spots, underwent extensive restoration work and has finally reopened to the public.
Among the new features, the lighting has been updated and the area is safer, but a promise has been made that the improvements in the area won’t stop here.
A historic landmark of Lisbon

If you often walk down Avenida da Liberdade, you’ve surely already noticed the changes.
The famous Tagus Lake, originally built in 1780, has been “returned” to the city following a major renovation, making this space better preserved and safer.
Among the main improvements, the visible repairs to the deteriorated structure stand out , along with the reinforcement of the lake’s walls, which eliminated the well-known and constant leaks.
To prevent accidents, the lake’s maximum depth is now 60 centimeters, and this channel has also been equipped with modern underwater lighting, creating a new aesthetic impact at night.

The metal fence, the stone coping, and the lake’s lining itself havealso been completely replaced or restored, given the state of disrepair they were in.
The Tagus Lake rehabilitation project also included conservation and restoration work on the statue at the top, as well as the restoration of the adjacent pedestrian walkway.

What’s next for Avenida da Liberdade?
While the new Lago Tejo already invites you to stop amid the traffic and bustle of downtown Lisbon, the plans for the capital’s main thoroughfare don’t stop there.
This renovation is seen as the first step toward a more comprehensive urban intervention; we recall the recent work on the Marquês de Pombal roundabout, a few meters further up, to restore color and beauty to this space, which is naturally gray and visually unappealing.

The mayor stated that this was only the first phase of a project aimed at renovating all sides of this luxurious Lisbon avenue, always with a focus on respecting its past.
Now, the sound of water flows once again through the heart of the city, restoring one of Avenida da Liberdade ’s most iconic features.
