According to information published on the website of Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa, it is said that this entity has already defined the transport fare update for 2026.
With effect from January 1, 2026, there will be a 2.28% increase in the price of urban public transport, which includes the metro, buses and urban trains under the management of AML – Área Metropolitana de Lisboa.
The reasons for this increase

Although this adjustment is in line with the annual update rules, it once again marks a crucial moment for families and workers in Greater Lisbon, forcing them to re-evaluate their monthly mobility budgets.
The Tariff Update Rate of 2.28% is a standard mechanism used to adjust the prices of public services, namely transport, taking into account factors such as inflation and operating costs, always with the aim of maintaining the financial sustainability of the AML transport system.
This also means that price increases cannot always be taken into account, as has happened, for example, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some prices are already known

Lisbon City Council had already announced that Navegante passes would maintain their prices in 2026, for the seventh consecutive year, since their creation in 2019.
Lisbon City Council had also already announced that the Navegante Urbano 3.ª Idade passes for the over-65s would remain free until 2029.
For the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas,
Lisbon is one of the few cities in Europe that has free public transport. With this measure, which we pioneered in 2022 and which we are now continuing, we want to give a very clear signal of the commitment we are making to decarbonizing the city, the climate transition, air quality and reducing car traffic.”
AML – Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, meanwhile, reports that the prices of Carris Metropolitana’s own tickets will also remain the same in 2026 , with the exception of occasional on-board tickets, which will be updated by 2.28%.
As for CP – Comboios de Portugal train ticket prices, they will increase by an average of 2.26%, while the price of the Green Rail Pass (as well as the Navegante) will remain unchanged.
However, the full Urban Train ticket will cost €1.50 (for one zone) and €3.90 (for eight). The 30-day subscription will also increase: one zone will cost €30.45, while two zones will cost €32.35.
