August is the month when many go on vacation, with the Algarve being the most popular destination among our readers.
It’s also in August that the city of Lisbon becomes more “free” of cars and people, so it feels good to make the most of it, without long queues for museums, exhibitions or other tourist attractions.
While it’s true that Lisbon has some truly memorable sites, and that just an hour from the capital you can find equally fascinating places, it’s also true that Portugal has a lot to discover.
We asked our readers where they usually go on vacation in August, and the answers are good suggestions that you too can take advantage of for what’s still to come this summer.
Algarve
The Algarve has always been one of our readers’ favorite destinations, especially if you enjoy the beautiful beaches or, if you don’t like the sand, the best water parks in the country, of which we suggest the fun Aqualand Algarve.
We confess that we are also fans of this part of the country, especially if you visit the less touristy eastern Algarve, which stretches from Loulé to Vila Real de Santo António.
The increasingly well-known towns of Olhão and Tavira are therefore increasingly visited at this time of year, offering the best that the Ria Formosa has to offer, from boat trips, crystal-clear beaches and, of course, fantastic and very diverse cuisine.
If you also choose this part of the country for your August vacation, be aware of some dangers on these beaches.

Alentejo
In second place in our readers’ choices is the Alentejo. And we couldn’t agree more. After all, it’s one of the closest areas for beach and countryside vacations to our beloved Lisbon.
There’s plenty to choose from in the Alentejo, from the interior to the Costa Vicentina coastline, where you can explore a thousand and one routes that will make your next vacation a memorable one.

Azores
The Azores archipelago has become an increasingly popular destination for the Portuguese, who travel to many of these islands to experience something different that the mainland can’t always offer at this time of year: tranquillity and an incredible green landscape.
According to The Telegraph, the Azores were one of the ideal areas to spend a vacation in Portugal during the most complicated days of the coronavirus pandemic.

Costa da Caparica
If the Alentejo coast is already relatively close to Lisbon, what about this real seaside resort: Costa da Caparica.
With a coastline full of beaches to suit all tastes, it is to the Costa da Caparica that many Lisbon residents turn to spend a well-deserved vacation. Our readers love it, and so do we!

Porto
With practically everyone moving to the south of the country, some of our readers have chosen the north, namely the city of Porto, to visit during what remains of this summer season.
That’s why we suggest you take a look at Porto Secreto, which does the same thing we do here at Lisboa Secreta, a guide with the best tips on what to do in this fantastic city.

New York
Spain is right next door, but it seems that our readers prefer other latitudes for their vacations outside of Portugal.
Some of the respondents traveled to New York, to the city that never sleeps, where you’re sure to have a summer vacation experience very different from the usual beach vacation in Portugal.
So, if you’re also planning to travel to this city in the United States of America, visit the website of our friends Secret New York, who will surely give you tips on what not to miss in this city.
