The immersive exhibition “Living Van Gogh” is a truly sensory experience, as once inside you find yourself enveloped by the colorful and meaningful works of this important impressionist artist.
As is customary with this type of exhibition at Immersivus Gallery Lisboa, located in the iconic Mãe D’Água Reservoir in Amoreiras , we would once again like to point out that there are few or no venues in the city as good as this one for admiring an exhibition of this magnitude.
We’ve already visited it and we’re only going to tell you a few details of our experience… without giving away all the secrets, right?
Our visit to the “Living Van Gogh” exhibition
Still outside, before entering the huge and colorful exhibition, you’ll come across giant sunflowers, one of the references of this painter, who had this flower as one of his greatest inspirations.
The magnitude of these decorative pieces is a warning of what you’ll find inside, a monumental space that will take you on an immersive journey into Van Gogh’s universe like you’ve never seen before.
Our first reaction was visual amazement. And no wonder: it takes several minutes to enjoy a 360º projection that magnificently immerses you in this artist’s most impressive works.
And there are dozens of works by this Dutch master that you will see projected onto the walls and vaults of this water reservoir, creating a three-dimensional sensation of his works, among vibrant colors and unmistakable brushstrokes that seem to come to life, where each painting reveals surprising details on a monumental scale, as if you were inside his own landscapes and portraits. It really is a unique, multi-sensory experience.
An interactive tour with a few surprises
The visit to the “Living Van Gogh” exhibition doesn’t just end in this giant projection room. There is much, much more to see and “feel”.
Even before you settle down to watch the entire projection, you can stop by the “We are all Vincent” painting area, where you can fill in the various blanks with paint to make a complete picture.
Continuing in the same entrance area, but after going around the projection room, you can still entertain yourself next to some screens “painting” the most famous paintings by the Dutch artist. It’s the perfect place to capture your first photos.
As you progress, the exhibition becomes even more dynamic and interactive. After leaving the reservoir, you’ll see the huge sunflowers again, undoubtedly one of the painter’s trademark images.
The path takes you to an area where you can even “dress up” as the artist, putting on his typical hat and simulating that you are painting one of his works. This is another perfect area for taking photos.
Even before you go down some very “narrow” stairs that lead to some catacombs, you’ll experience another interactive moment through one of Van Gogh’s most captivating paintings: “The Starry Night”, where you’ll be able to see the painting itself moving… and we won’t tell you any more. Buy your ticket to see for yourself.
The grand finale
It’s in this sort of entrance to one of Lisbon’s most incredible galleries that you’ll be able to watch the last part of this experience, by viewing a virtual reality movie.
This is one of the most anticipated areas of your visit, where you’ll be able to “dive” into the mind of this iconic artist for seven minutes, in a sensory experience that will take you on a journey through Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpieces, where the paintings come to life and reveal almost all of their secrets.
After watching this movie, you can take the opportunity to buy a souvenir or simply leave… with the certainty that the “Living Van Gogh” exhibition will remain etched in your memory forever, thanks to its immersive nature, capable of arousing sensations and emotions, in an exhibition that goes far beyond a simple traditional visit to see the paintings of one of the greatest artists of all time.
