Avenida da Liberdade is not only known as one of Lisbon’s luxury shopping destinations;it is also an archive of memories and stories, which will be unveiled this March through the now customary annual event “Avenida Convida”.
Organized by the Avenida Association, this cultural event will take place in three unique moments, through conversations that everyone can attend completely free of charge.
The surprising stories of the capital

The themes are varied, ranging from the “Roaring Twenties” to the future, in conversations that also seek to provide a perspective on what the city and this avenue will be like in the coming decades.
Best of all, at the “Avenida Convida” event, you will be able to attend these conversations in three emblematic venues of Lisbon’s cultural scene:
- National Society of Fine Arts
- Buchholz Bookstore
- Medeiros e Almeida Museum
The sessions… in “conversations”

The “Avenida Convida” program begins on March 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes (SNBA), at Rua Barata Salgueiro 36, under the theme “The 125 years of the Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes,” with the conversation focusing on the vital role of this space in Portuguese artistic identity. The panel will feature João Paulo Queiroz (President of SNBA), Jaime Silva, and will be moderated by José Carlos Pereira.
On March 16, also at 6:30 p.m., the focus will be on Livraria Buchholz (Rua Duque de Palmela 4), to address a topic that has been much talked about in recent years: Lisbon nightlife, with the theme “Nightlife in Lisbon, from Avenida da Liberdade onwards,” where the evolution of nightclubs and the capital’s bohemian lifestyle since the 1920s will be discussed. The debate brings together researchers Cecília Vaz and Rosa Fina with musician and artist Manuel João Vieira, a legendary figure of the capital’s nightlife, moderated by journalist Joana Stichini Vilela.
The final conversation will take place 10 days later, on March 26 at 6:30 p.m., at the Medeiros e Almeida Museum, at Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 4, with the session “Avenida da Liberdade – History and Prospects,” which will offer a critical retrospective on the urban evolution of this important Lisbon thoroughfare, with an emphasis on predictions about its future. The conversation will feature renowned art historian Raquel Henriques da Silva and will be moderated by Simonetta Luz Afonso.
