At a time when digital dominates, the pleasure of browsing through books is even greater, especially if it’s accompanied by a comforting hot drink, like a coffee. In Lisbon, you can take a break from the hectic pace of everyday life and immerse yourself in the world of reading in one of the most beautiful bookshops-cafés in the world: Ler Devagar.
We didn’t say it ourselves, but 1000 Libraries, an online community of book and library lovers. After two months of global voting, in which more than 200,000 readers contributed, the platform drew up some rankings, including the top 10 most beautiful bookshop-cafés.
In a list where Paris (France) stands out, Lisbon appears in 7th place thanks to the photogenic Ler Devagar, located in the LX Factory. This space stands out not only as a meeting place for those who want to buy books, but also as a venue for literary events and more.

What do people say about Ler Devagar?
In the top 10 of 1000 Libraries you can read a simple but enthusiastic description that portrays the essence of the space well:
This printing warehouse turned bookstore/cultural center is located in Lisbon (Portugal), and retains much of its industrialdesign. With books stretching from the floor to the high walls of the warehouse, it’s a unique space, with a huge old printing press and an iconic art installation of a flying cyclist suspended in the air.”
A bit of its history
Created in 1999 in Bairro Alto, Ler Devagar moved ‘suitcases and luggage’ to the LX Factory premises in 2009, where it remains to this day as a reflection of the diverse cultural offer of this block.
With an area of 600 square meters, this bookshop-café has won the hearts of Lisbon’s most avid readers (and visitors too). There are new and used books there, as well as meetings, debates and, of course, a coffee to go with it!
