Although many suspect that Benfica District is an electoral project, given that the elections for the presidency of Sport Lisboa e Benfica will take place after the summer, the truth is that, even with other people taking over the highest seat at the club in the 2nd Circular, this real estate-sports plan has “legs to stand on” with anyone.
The ambitious project, which involves an investment of around 220 million euros and is expected to be completed by 2030 (before the Women’s European Football Championship and the 2030 World Cup, organized by Portugal, Spain and Morocco), will completely transform this area of Lisbon into what is already being called “a vibrant world-class urban district”.

Innovative spaces for members and fans
And, by the way, for all the locals and tourists who visit the city, as this development will house much more than sports activities. But we’re already there!
After the presentation last night (July 22, 2025) we got the clear impression that Lisbon is preparing to welcome one of the most innovative urban and sporting projects in Europe, named by the management that presented it as Benfica District.
It promises to transform the Estádio da Luz area into a premium destination for sport, culture and entertainment, aligning the legacy of Sport Lisboa e Benfica with the most modern developments in the world.
If the “Cathedral” was already considered a source of pride (at least for all the members and fans of the eagles’ club), it will now have everything it takes to become a new center for immersive experiences in the city, 365 days a year.

Much more than “just” soccer
Let’s get down to business: what the new Benfica District will offer everyone:
- A mega multipurpose arena for 10,000 people, ready to host live music concerts, eSports, top cultural or sporting events, among many other uses;
- Two new indoorsports pavilions, which will equip Benfica’s facilities with the best of the latest technology;
- A new generation 25-meter community swimming pool for leisure, training and competition;
- Innovative theater, stores, restaurants, hotels, residences and commercial spaces that make the district a true cosmopolitan hub of Lisbon;
- Outdoor soccer field and rooftop running track for fitness activities with the best view over the city;
- A new monumental square for members and fans, inspired by the city’s icons, where the statue of Eusébio will welcome them, with giant screens, leisure areas and guaranteed entertainment before and after matches.
A “renewed” Estádio da Luz
After the latest works to increase the capacity of the current stadium to more than 68,000 seats (and in two years to more than 70,000), the new Benfica District project aims to reach 80,000, in order to solve the huge waiting list that already exists for the purchase of Red Passes (season tickets).
But that’s not all! The facade of the Estádio da Luz is going to change, and a lot! With the installation of LED technology lights, it will be more dynamic and fluid than ever, while the interior will also be more comfortable, safe and accessible for everyone, while always respecting the environment through the use of photovoltaic panels, green roofs and innovative ecological solutions.
For the current president of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Rui Costa,
This is an ambitious and strategic project, thinking of the members, the fans and the club, which we intend to start implementing immediately, to create better conditions in the stadium, for the sports, to project Benfica even more in the country and in the world as the great sporting reference in Portugal and in time to be completed for the major international competitions that the country will host. It’s a ‘Benfica-style’ project, which creates better conditions for competition and for experiencing the club.”
