Holidays that fall on a Friday or Monday feel like a long weekend — and are the perfect excuse to plan something different, whether with friends, family, or as a couple. This year, October brings just such a day: Monday, October 5, which marks the Establishment of the Republic.
But between outings and leisurely lunches, there are also errands that can’t wait. If you’ve put off your grocery shopping until this holiday or still have that trip to the post office pending for weeks, it’s good to know which places and services will be open in Lisbon—and which ones will have altered hours or will be closed.
Why is October 5 a national holiday?

Before we move on to our brief practical guide, we want to remind you why October 5 is a national holiday. After all, we don’t want anyone to ask you that question and have you not know the answer—especially since it’s important to know a little more about Portugal’s history.
And in this case, Lisbon has a particularly special connection to this anniversary: it was in the capital that the monarchy fell and the Republic was proclaimed from the balcony of the Paços do Concelho—the building that houses the Lisbon City Council—at the climax of several days of clashes.
The event led to the departure of King Manuel II, the last king of Portugal, who left the country for a long exile. Thus began the First Republic and a period of significant political and social changes.
But what will be open (or closed)?

- Public services: Traditional CTT stores and Banco CTT are usually closed on national holidays, with the exception of some CTT service points located in partner venues (such as large retail stores or shopping centers)—check the specific hours of the CTT store or service point nearest you here
- Metro: Under normal operating conditions, the Lisbon Metro is open from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.; however, train service is usually less frequent. Even so, you can check the schedules on the official website
- Amoreiras Shopping Center: It’s usually open every day from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., including weekends and holidays, though hours may be adjusted on special occasions such as the Christmas season
- Centro Colombo: Holidayhours are generally from 10 a.m. to midnight, except on specific dates such as Christmas and New Year’s Day
Editor’s Note: Before you leave home, always check opening hours and information on official websites, as they are subject to change.
