There’s a different way to explore the “Portuguese Riviera” — a name given to the former Costa do Sol, traditionally associated with Cascais and Estoril, and which, in a broader sense, can include Oeiras and Sintra—without taking the Cascais Line train: aboard a boat.
The “Between Lighthouses: The Grand Journey Along the Cascais Coast” experience offers a two-hour tour past some of the most famous sights along this stretch of coastline, between Cascais, Oeiras, and Bugio.
Far from being a mass-market activity, the experience takes on a more intimate format: each trip carries between four and 12 passengers. Designed for friends, family, or a romantic date, the experience includes background music and a welcome drink —a different way to swap your routine for the fresh Atlantic breeze, the salt in the air, and memorable landscapes.

What you’ll be able to see (and photograph)
Anyone accustomed to taking the train between Cais do Sodré and Cascais is familiar with the succession of beaches, forts, and the waterfront. But from the sea, the perspective changes completely—and so does the experience. It’s a veritable parade of sights overlooking some of the line’s most iconic landmarks, viewed from the Atlantic.
What will you see? For example, the beaches of Carcavelos and Estoril, the Avencas Biophysical Area of Interest, the picturesque Bay of Cascais, the historic Citadel, the magnificent São Julião da Barra Fort, the Santa Marta Lighthouse, and the impressive cliffs of Boca do Inferno —a limestone escarpment on the Costa da Guia, where the sea rushes through a cavity and a rocky opening with great force; on days with strong swells, the roar of the waves and the pressure justify its dramatic name.
Where the Tagus meets the Atlantic
But one of the most eagerly awaited moments (and the perfect excuse to take lots of photos) is the approach to the enigmatic Bugio Lighthouse, which has stood at the São Lourenço da Cabeça Seca Fort since the late 16th century. It is precisely here that the Tagus River meets the Atlantic.
Originally designed to defend the Portuguese coastline from pirate attacks, today it operates entirely remotely and automatically, without the presence of the traditional resident lighthouse keepers who were there since 1982. The artificial island and its fort hold centuries of history in near-total isolation, weathering the elements in the middle of the waters and opening its doors only on very rare occasions to share its secrets.
The perfect setting for a late afternoon
This themed boat trip transforms what for many is a daily train commute into a true adventure of maritime discovery. After all, the view from the Atlantic along the Cascais Coast changes everything, especially with the last rays of sun glinting off the water in the late afternoon!
