A “royal” home overlooking the Atlantic
Far from the bright lights of Paris or Monte Carlo, several members of European noble and royal families found peace on the “Portuguese Riviera.” As we’ve already mentioned, one of the most notable cases was that of Italy’s last monarch. Known as the “King of May”— for having reigned for just over 30 days between May and June 1946—Umberto II was forced into exile following a referendum that led to the abolition of the monarchy in Italy.
The head of the ancient (and notable) House of Savoy took refuge in Cascais for over a decade at the home of the Pinto Basto family. In 1961, thanks to the efforts of a group of loyal Italian monarchists who helped fund the construction of his permanent residence, he moved into the home he named Villa Itália, in honor of his country of origin. The luxurious building hosted sumptuous parties and high-society gatherings until Umberto II’s death.
Years later, this retreat, steeped in refinement and history, was restored and given a new lease on life as the Grande Real Villa Itália Hotel & Spa, a five-star luxury hotel. With a privileged view of the Atlantic, overlooking Boca do Inferno, it is in this charming setting that you’ll have the opportunity to sample countless wines from Portuguese producers.
