It seems that the last weekend in September is the perfect time for anyone who loves traveling back in time. After all, we have not one, but two suggestions for medieval fairs, taking place between September 25 and 27. While we’ve already mentioned the Marvila Medieval Fair here—which will “set up shop” at Vale do Fundão Urban Park for a historical reenactment right in the heart of Lisbon—for those looking for an excuse to take a little getaway, there’s another event to mark on your calendar: the Palmela Medieval Fair.
Located about a 40-minute drive from the capital, the town of Palmela stands out year-round for the medieval charms of its castle and the breathtaking view that can be enjoyed from there. However, with the historical reenactment taking place from September 25 to 27, the town is set to become even more magical , in an event that spans from Palmela Castle to the historic center. This year’s theme is “Palmela, King Afonso IV, and the Order of Santiago (1340–1348),” though it is important to note that the monarch’s visit to Palmela is fictional.
Highlights of the Palmela Medieval Fair
For three days, the Palmela Medieval Fair offers a program packed with activities for all ages. Right at the entrance, you’ll find traditional games and medieval carousels, proving that the desire to play is nothing new. There are various activities and attractions available throughout the event, such as:
- Merchants’ Stalls
- Live music, medieval dances, performances, and theater
- Artisans’ and Craftsmen’s Campsites
- Falconry Demonstrations
- The “Path of the Plague” ( in the Revelim Norte woods)—a somber, staged tour that depicts the arrival of the plague in 1348, showing how the sick and the poorest were banished beyond the town gates in the Middle Ages.
The program is further complemented by medieval tournaments, the thrilling “Assault on the Castle,” and, of course, various stalls offering local dishes and Portuguese products to snack on. For more detailed information, check out the official poster.
Also, if you’re thinking of taking a weekend trip from Lisbon to Palmela, it’s best to plan your trip in advance. Before leaving home, be sure to check the parking and traffic conditions at the venue.
