What is a panda doing at a roundabout in Lisbon? As strange as it may seem at first glance, the truth is that it is a donation from Valorpneu, a non-profit organization, to the Marvila Parish Council.
Located at a roundabout in the Bela Vista area , it seems that the panda will remain there permanently. However, this is not just any figure. Made from over a hundred used tires and standing ten meters tall, it is the famous “Tired Panda” by Bordalo II.
With this change of address and presence on public roads, Valorpneu’s goal is to raise awareness among the community in general about the importance of extending the life of materials, with a view to a more sustainable future.
It all started at this exhibition
The “Tired Panda” appeared in 2022 as part of the “Evilution” exhibition, which was on display at Edu Hub Lisbon. At the time, in addition to the panda, Bordalo II presented us with several giant animals made from recycled materials.
As we reported in Lisboa Secreta, the motto of“Evilution” was to address the end of the Covid-19 quarantines, when animals once again filled the ‘blank’ spaces left by humans.
Bordalo II is famous for his messages combating waste, as well as his criticism of the excessive consumer society in which we live. More recently, he also took part in a moment of social activism by criticizing the real estate speculation affecting Lisbon.
