In Lisbon, there is no shortage of typical dishes, nor excellent restaurants to please the palate. But when it comes to bifanas, our mouths water. That’s why there’s an initiative that’s attracting our attention (and that of other media), namely the confection of the “the biggest steak in the world”.
Taking place in Vendas Novas, about an hour from Lisbon, this impressive gastronomic moment is scheduled for September 7 (Saturday), at 7:30pm.
The initiative is part of the festivities marking the 62nd anniversary of the municipality, and is organized by the local authority, in collaboration with the Panificadora Central de Vendas Novas and the various bifana houses in the town.
The numbers for “the biggest steak in the world”
According to the site of the Municipality of Vendas Novas (CMVN), these are the numbers that promise to surprise– and please the palates of those present:
- 15 meters long
- About 50 kg of flour
- Approximately 32 kg of pork loin
More than a record attempt, the idea is to celebrate unity and community spirit, since it is a joint effort. At the end of the cooking, everyone present will have the opportunity to taste the “biggest steak in the world” for free.
Did you know that there is a King & Queen of the Bifana?
With the aim of consolidating Vendas Novas as the Capital of the Bifana, it’s no surprise that the making of the ‘biggest bifana in the world’ isn’t the only initiative taking place.
Before the gigantic delicacy, at 5.30pm on the same day, a contest will be held to elect none other than the “King and Queen of the Bifana”. To be crowned, participants need to eat as many bifanas as possible in just ten minutes.
