At Lisboa Secreta we are passionate about lisbon skies, and we even have a guide where you can admire the firmament and the stars.
So it’s quite normal for you to see a lot of news around here related to the the subject of astronomy. This time it was the Strawberry Full Moon, which usually happens in June, that captured our attention. Shall we learn a little more about this moon?
The Strawberry Moon
Although the fruit may suggest that the moon will be redder or pinker, the truth is that the color of this astronomical phenomenon may be what we are used to seeing every day when the moon appears overhead.
However, depending on its location and atmospheric conditions, the moon’s face may show some reddish or even golden hues. Let’s see what happens from the early hours of June 22.
The story
The history of the name behind thisStrawberryMoon, as well as other moons, has a lot to do with the harvest season, in this case the picking of wild strawberries in the northern hemisphere by Native American tribes.
In Europe, this moon is also called the Rose Moon or the Honey Moon and, in these situations, will have another cultural meaning.
As far as the zodiac is concerned, this moon is said to be associated with feelings of love, purity and prosperity, as well as symbolizing a desire for change, flexibility and exploration, usually when it is in the constellation of Sagittarius, which will be the case with this moon in 2024.
The best way to observe it
It all depends on the weather conditions which, at the time of writing, were not very good for optimal observation.
We’ll see what it’s like in the early hours of June 22. At that time, the best place to observe the Full Strawberry Moon will be the darkest and most open, away from city lights.
The moon is known to be visible throughout the night and its appearance can vary, not only in color but also in size, depending on its proximity to the Earth and its position in the sky.
After this Strawberry Full Moon, you’ll have to wait another month, until July 21, to observe the Deer Moon.
