Winter is going through its most severe phase in mainland Portugal, which since January 17 has been “suffering” from very cold temperatures due to a mass of cold air of polar origin, recording negative values of up to -6 °C and persistent frosts.
According to forecasts by the specialized meteorology portal Meteored, this episode is one of the most severe of this winter and will continue at least until today, January 20.
The coldest places in Portugal

The north and center of the country will be the coldest, with the northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Serra da Estrela being the hardest hit by these low temperatures, with the mercury reaching extreme negative values.
But the influence of this cold front will not be limited to these mountains; the intense cold will also reach the adjacent valleys, creating conditions for frequent frosts that can hinder car traffic and affect local agriculture.
And no, not even the coast will escape this polar mass, with cities such as Porto and Viana do Castelo recording very low temperatures, close to 0 °C. Here, the worst will be the wind, which intensifies the feeling of cold.
When will temperatures rise?
It is expected that, starting tomorrow, the polar air mass will begin to dissipate, giving way to a gradual rise in temperatures, putting an end to the worst cold spell of 2026 (so far).
