Lisbon City Council has just unanimously approved (January 29, 2026) the recognition of eight new “Shops with History,” which now join the extensive list of these spaces, which are a living reference of traditional commerce in the city.
These stores have been open every day for many decades, some even for centuries, and are extremely important in “maintaining” the typical character and culture of our capital, which has not always been the case due to the “disappearance” of some of these important and iconic businesses.
The new “Shops with History”

Aged between 41 and an impressive 185 years, these spaces join a select group of just over 150 locations that are considered the “living memory” of the city.
This year’s selection stands out for its diversity, proving that Lisbon’s history is written as much in fine jewelry counters as in shoemaker’s workshops.

Why visit a “Shop with History”?

Since 2017, this municipal program has aimed to preserve shops and their heritage, as well as to boost and reactivate commercial activity in the city of Lisbon.
These are places where customer service is personalized and where the counter has more stories to tell than any digital guide. By choosing to shop at these establishments, citizens and tourists are financing the survival of Lisbon’s culture.
