The inauguration ceremony for a new square in Lisbon took place on June 14, in the parish of Avenidas Novas: it’s called Largo de São Sebastião da Pedreira and is part of the “Praça em Cada Bairro” program.
This square in Lisbon has an area of 13,000 square meters and has become a more pleasant space for all Lisboners and passers-by.
Among the highlights is that it is now a place for leisure and socializing, and safety for pedestrians has been thought out in detail.
In addition, there are more green areas in the space and parking is better organized. But there’s more!
Another public space in Lisbon
In addition to all the new features already mentioned, the new square in Lisbon also has other improvements:
- cycling areas
- non-slip sidewalks
- new crosswalks
- more parking spaces for users with reduced mobility
- more street furniture, such as benches, chairs, bins and public transport shelters
For the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas,
To be here is to see work! Joy is making a public space. We know we still have a lot to do. But in recent years we have invested a lot in a green city. It’s not visible and people don’t have that feeling, but in recent years we’ve planted more than 30,000 trees in Lisbon.”
The redevelopment of Largo de São Sebastião da Pedreira extends to practically the entire area surrounding this square in Lisbon, especially the streets of São Sebastião da Pedreira, Augusto Santos, Dr. António Cândido, Marquês Sá da Bandeira, Nicolau Bettencourt and Filipe Folque, which have also been renov ated.
A Square in Every Neighborhood” program
Largo de São Sebastião da Pedreira is part of the project “Uma Praça em cada Bairro” (A Square in Every Neighborhood), which aims to renovate spaces that are in disrepair or even abandoned in various areas of the city.
In this sense, it’s normal to find more cases like this square in Lisbon, such as squares, streets, gardens or even shopping areas.
These places could be redeveloped to turn these public spaces into meeting points for local communities, with an emphasis on creating infrastructures that can benefit all citizens, including places to socialize, pedestrian and bicycle areas, access to public transport and, of course, limiting car traffic as much as possible.
It should be noted that in order to carry out these small projects, which are of great importance to the local community, public consultations are held so that those who live here can give their best opinions on improvements to be taken into account.
