March is synonymous with spring, but also with a very vibrant cultural agenda in Lisbon. From initiatives dedicated topoetry enthusiasts , not to mention free celebrations at renowned museums, there is plenty to choose from; and cinema is not left out with the return of MONSTRA.
Between March 12 and 22, Cinema de São Jorge, Cinemateca Portuguesa, and Cinema City Alvalade will host the 25th edition of MONSTRA – Lisbon Animation Festival. In total, around 500 films will be screened in over 120 sessions.
Nature and sustainability
This year, the central theme is nature and sustainability, presenting works that aim to promote reflection on the planet, the landscape, and the relationship between humans and the environment. In this sense, there are several associated thematic sessions, such as “Recycled Animation” and “Landscapes in Motion.”
Other highlights of MONSTRA
The MONSTRA program includes short and feature film competitions, as well as the debut of a competitive section dedicated to medium-length films (15 and 40 minutes). There are international works , with a focus on Latvia, but also national ones.
In addition, MONSTRA is once again showing its solidarity with the Palestinian people with “To Gaza with Love: A Global Animjam,” consisting of 56 microfilms made by authors from around the world, curated by British director Joanna Quinn.
