MACAM, the new contemporary art museum and 5-star hotel, opens in Lisbon on March 22, 2025.
Museu de Arte Contemporânea Armando Martins, or MACAM, is an innovative Lisbon complex that combines a modern art museum with a luxury 5-star hotel, located in the historic Palácio Condes da Ribeira Grande, on Rua da Junqueira, between Alcântara and Belém.
MACAM: some curiosities and figures
Armando Martins is passionate about contemporary art and has more than 600 works in his private collection, from the late 19th century to the present day, which you can now admire in this new museum.
The opening, on March 22, coincides with the collector’s birthday and the date on which he acquired his first original work of art, on March 22, 1974.
The MACAM, which has an area of 13,000 square meters, has preserved the essence of the 18th century palace, while incorporating modern elements, with the façade of the new wing covered in three-dimensional tiles by artist Maria Ana Vasco Costa, with traditional Portuguese inspiration.
Not to be missed on the day of your visit
At the opening, on March 22, MACAM will present two temporary exhibitions, both curated by Adelaide Ginga : “The Anthropocene: in search of a new human?” and “War: Reality, Myth and Fiction”; and a permanent exhibition, “A Collection of Two Times”, which includes works by renowned artists such as Paula Rego, Júlio Pomar and Marina Abramović.
What to expect from the 5-star hotel?
The MACAM Hotel is the other side of this huge cultural and tourist project, with 64 rooms, each with works from the MACAM collection, as well as a library, a contemporary restaurant and an auditorium.
It also has a restored 18th century chapel, which now houses àCapela – Live Arts Bar, a space where cultural events and performing arts will take place.
The MACAM (museum) public opening party will last three days, from March 22 to 24 and, of course, there will be free admission, with access to various activities, including music, poetry, DJ sets and a special program for the little ones.
