Italy dominated the podium, as expected. But among a hundred names ranging from Naples to Tokyo, one Lisbon spot stood out: Lupita, in Cais do Sodré, made the list of the top 100 pizzerias on the planet.
On Wednesday, June 24, hundreds of pizza makers and food journalists gathered at Studio Novanta in Milan for the fourth edition of The Best Pizza Awards. The top three were all Italian: Francesco Martucci, from I Masanielli in Caserta, won for the second consecutive time, followed by Roberto Davanzo, from Bob Alchimia a Spicchi, and Francesco Capece, from Confine in Milan. But in the middle of the rankings is a Portuguese name: Duda Ferreira, from Lupita, in 79th place.
Who is Duda Ferreira?
Duda Ferreira’s journey began early: at age 18, he was already working professionally in restaurant kitchens, making pizzas in his spare time. He moved to Lisbon in 2016 and, through pop-up dinners, gradually built the reputation that would give rise to Lupita. Today, the restaurant has two locations in the city, one in Cais do Sodré and another in Alvalade.
Sourdough Starter and Portuguese Flours
What sets Lupita apart is its process: naturally leavened pizzas, made with a sourdough starter cultivated over many years and a blend of whole-grain, artisanal Portuguese flours, developed in partnership with a local miller. The result is a cuisine that blends Brazilian roots with local ingredients and international influences. This isn’t the first time it has drawn attention abroad: in 2024, it made the European list of the 50 Top Pizza.
And Porto Was Also in the Spotlight
Outside the top 100, but receiving an honorable mention, were two Portuguese names on the “Ones to Follow” list—a selection of 150 pizza chefs from 39 countries, presented in no particular order, as emerging talents to watch closely. They are Jorge Mariano, from Generosa pizzeria, and Léo Oldman, from Oldman Pizza Studio, both in Porto.
