Last September (2024), Lisbon residents witnessed the opening of Zara ‘s second largest Spanish ready-to-wear store in Rossio . But today the news is about the small tea and coffee shop, Pérola do Rossio, which has reopened its doors after years (since 2021) closed due to work on the new building.
The long-awaited reopening took place on October 14, and here we have to highlight the true resilience of Lisbon’s historic commerce, which, in this case, did not allow itself to be “absorbed” by one of the world’s largest clothing giants.
Where is it, and how did it turn out?
If you know where the new Zara is, Pérola do Rossio is in the same building, right in the middle, in Praça D. Pedro IV.
The store has kept its original façade, while retaining its visual identity, where the blue and green neons clearly stand out, creating a bright and enchanting atmosphere.
Pérola do Rossio has also kept its designation as Lojas Com História, as well as its interior decoration, where the vaulted ceiling and classic architectural details stand out.
Inside, you’ll still be able to buy almost anything related to teas and coffees, from in-house products to imported blends from all over the world such as Brazil, Timor, São Tomé and Príncipe, Colombia and Guatemala.
Wines, sweets, jams, cookies and chocolates are some of the other products you can find here, many of them delicious accompaniments to the infusions and beans for drinks sold here.
Pérola do Rossio was founded in 1923 by Mário Lopes de Moraes and has remained in the hands of the same family for three generations.
Address: Praça Dom Pedro IV 105 (Baixa)
