September brings back the Feira da Avenida, one of the oldest street market events in Lisbon. Over the course of two extended weekends, Avenida da Liberdade hosts more than 100 stalls, set up side by side along several blocks of the avenue.
A little bit of everything, on display for passersby

Each stall functions almost like a small independent shop, with its own selection and style: some sell antique tableware, others specialize in jewelry and costume jewelry, some bring fresh flowers, others display secondhand books and out-of-print magazines, or even clothing, accessories, and regional snacks. It’s not uncommon to leave home with one thing in mind—a piece of clothing, for example—and return with something completely different, found by chance at one of the stalls along the way.
A tradition dating back more than a decade
The event is organized by the Avenida da Liberdade Association, the organization that has promoted the fair since its first edition in 2011. According to the association itself, it is the most central of all the fairs held in the capital, precisely because of its location on Lisbon’s best-known thoroughfare. The schedule varies depending on the time of year: between November and April, it usually takes place once a month, while between May and October, there are two editions per month.
