The bronze laurel wreaths that for decades crowned the monumental columns in Eduardo VII Park will finally return to their place. After being removed in 2023, and following a delay that had already sparked a public petition, the Lisbon City Council confirms that the reinstallation should be completed by the end of September.
Three years out of place
The crowns were removed in 2023 as part of preparations for World Youth Day and Pope Francis’s visit to Lisbon, with the promise that they would be returned after being restored. However, two years have passed with no sign of their return, which led a group of citizens to launch a public petition in October 2025 demanding the restoration of the pieces, arguing that the preservation of their architectural and sculptural elements is a municipal obligation.
Scaffolding already set up for the final phase
Now that the conservation, treatment, and restoration of the crowns have been completed, scaffolding is currently being erected next to the monumental complex. This is necessary to access the tops of the towers and proceed with the essential structural reinforcement required before their permanent reinstallation.
Carlos Moedas, mayor of Lisbon, stated that the reinstallation of the crowns marks the conclusion of a restoration process for one of Lisbon’s most iconic heritage sites, adding that while the restoration work proved challenging, the city is returning to the city a cornerstone of its identity.
