We were there when the helicopter carrier Trieste, the largest warship in the Italian Navy, arrived and began its docking maneuvers at the dock of the Santa Apolónia Cruise Terminal, opposite the Alfama district.
The imposing ship, the largest ever built by the Italians, will be open for public visits on July 31 (from 3pm to 7pm); August 1 (from 10am to 12pm) and August 2 (from 10am to 12pm and from 3pm to 5pm), according to one of the officials on site (confirmation required), in what will be an exclusive opportunity for the Portuguese to get to know one of the most advanced naval platforms in the world, a benchmark in military innovation and operational versatility.
The Trieste is a multi-purpose ship, also defined as a helicopter carrier, and is currently undergoing cadet training.
This ship represents a new era for Italian maritime defense, standing out for its multifunctional capacity: it acts as an amphibious assault ship, a base for humanitarian operations and can be transformed into a floating hospital for international missions.
Launched at sea in 2019, it officially entered service with the Italian Navy in 2024, with some technological curiosities:
- 3 76mm cannons (potentially Super Rapid anti-aircraft guns ) for advanced defense;
- 3 25mm machine guns and 2 vertical launch systems (VLS) for air defense missiles;
- Monumental flight deck: 230m long and 36m wide, with nine simultaneous take-off points;
- Capacity to operate between 14 and 20 aircraft, including F-35B short take-off and vertical landing fighters, as well as helicopters such as the EH101 and NH90.
If you want to secure the best photos of the Trieste, learn more about military technology and feel what it’s like to be on a real warship, this could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
