Construction has already begun on the long-awaited Todos-os-Santos Hospital, which will be located in the parish of Marvila, if nothing “goes wrong”, and will start operating in 2027.
This is a giant step forward in the restructuring of health services in Lisbon, and the new Todos-os-Santos Hospital is expected to have 875 beds, replacing various health units throughout the capital, such as the hospitals of Santa Marta, Capuchos, São Lázaro, Curry Cabral, Dona Estefânia and Maternidades Alfredo da Costa.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Carlos Moedas highlighted the importance of this hospital for the city,
The city of the next 10 years is being defined now, with the courage of these decisions. It’s a decision that will change the lives of Lisbon residents and will be remembered for many years to come.”
The event, which was also attended by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, Health Minister Ana Paula Martins and the former health ministers involved in the project, as well as city councillors Joana Almeida (Urbanism), Filipa Roseta (Works) and Sofia Athayde (Social Rights), also revealed that the Todos-os-Santos Hospital will also be known as the East Lisbon Hospital, a project that has been on the back burner for several decades and has only now been “unblocked”.
The construction has an estimated cost of 100 million euros, funds from the PRR – Recovery and Resilience Plan, and will be one of the largest projects with the greatest impact on the lives of all Lisbon residents, making it possible to considerably increase and improve the health services provided to the entire community.
