From the north to the south of Portugal, there are some options to take into account for those who don’t want to leave their furry friend in a pet-hotel or at a relative’s house. So, to make the most of your best friend’s company, take a look at the following list, as well as taking note of some rules and precautions to adopt so that nothing gets in the way of your summer.

8 pet-friendly beaches with concessions
Porto da Areia North Beach
Located in the Peniche area, this is known as the first pet-friendly beach in Portugal. As well as being a destination to take your furry friend, this area is worth exploring for its natural beauty.
Coral Beach
Now, moving a little further up towards the north of Portugal, more specifically in Viana do Castelo (Minho), Praia do Coral is another spot to consider for those who don’t leave home without their best friend.
Suave Sea Beach
Still in the north of Portugal, more specifically in the region of Esposende, Praia Suave Mar is another of the country’s pet-friendly beaches.
Ramalha Beach
The Apúlia area (in the north of Portugal) is famous for its windmills by the sea. However, this isn’t the only reason to go there, as Praia da Ramalha Sul is also on the list of dog-friendly beaches.
Brito Beach
Located in the area of São Félix da Marinha, in the northern municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, Praia de Brito has joined the list of pet-friendly spots for the summer since 2022.
Amoreiras Beach
Heading down to the central region, Praia das Amoreiras (Torres de Vedras) can be a summer spot to consider, offering shelters, drinking fountains for the paws and more.
Furnas Rio Beach, Odemira
According to the Zooplus website, this is the only pet-friendly beach below Greater Lisbon.

Rules to follow on pet-friendly beaches
These are concession beaches, i.e. already marked as dog friendly, which meet certain conditions and obligations so that dogs can go to the beach, such as:
- Dogs must always be accompanied by their owners;
- Dogs must be on a leash;
- Dogs of dangerous breeds must be muzzled;
- It is compulsory to pick up animal waste, and if the owner doesn’t have the material to do so, he will most likely find it on these beaches that are already prepared to receive animals;
- Animals that are sick, in heat, pregnant or injured should not go to the beaches;
- Owners should keep their pet ‘ s vaccination records up to date, among other things.
