The countdown has already begun. Casa Independente, located at Largo do Intendente, has events scheduled through December 19, and until then, it’s selling the collection it has amassed over the years: sofas, tables, chairs, lamps, and mirrors, with items starting at 3 €. The venue itself announced the sale on social media, so that the furniture can get a second life.
What’s for sale and how to buy
There’s a little bit of everything: velvet sofas and armchairs, tables, chairs, sideboards, mirrors, lamps, and even a desk, many in the style of the ’60s and ’70s. The cheapest item is a small bowl, for 3 €; the most expensive is a pair of velvet armchairs, for 300 €.
Items are being put up for sale gradually, so it’s worth checking back often. The inventory and purchase rules can be found in the link in the bio of Casa Independente’s Instagram account.
Why is Casa Independente closing?
The permanent closure was announced in September 2025. In a statement sent to Lusa, as reported by Observador, the founders, Patrícia Craveiro Lopes and Inês Valdez, explained that in October 2023, they received word that the building was going to be sold and that their lease would be terminated. An agreement with the owner allowed them to continue operations for another year, but neither the negotiations to continue beyond 2026 nor the search for alternatives—including a municipal space—were successful.
14 years breathing new life into Intendente
Casa Independente opened in 2012, when the neighborhood was still overshadowed by prostitution and drugs. Since then, it has hosted concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, book presentations, conferences, artist residencies, and performances.
