Over the last few days we’ve visited some of the neighborhoods where the Christmas season is at its most intense: we’ve been to Chiado, Baixa and some of the city’s main avenues, Liberdade, Roma and Guerra Junqueiro, in the guide we called Christmas in Lisbon’s neighborhoods.
To conclude this trip to Christmas in Lisbon’s neighborhoods, today we bring you a short summary of the best places to visit in these places.
Table Of Contents
Christmas in Chiado
Whether it’s because the streets and shop windows are lit up with decorations reminiscent of this season, or because it’s traditionally an area where people stroll and shop, the Chiado district is one of our favorite places in the city for Christmas shopping.
In this part of town, our place of choice was the Bertrand bookshop, which is right on the corner of Rua Garrett and Rua Anchieta, next to the Basilica of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires.
It is recognized by the Guinness Book as the oldest bookshop in the world still in business, having been founded in 1732 by two French brothers.
Christmas in Baixa
Baixa is one of the best places to see the Christmas lights, usually where there are more traditional shops.
One of our favorites downtown is the Palácio da Ginja. It’s located at Rua da Prata 223, and here you’ll find one of the best liqueurs in the city, as well as packs of tasty Belgian chocolate cups, an excellent Christmas gift suggestion.
Christmas on Avenida da Liberdade
Christmas on Avenida da Liberdade starts at Parque Eduardo VII and goes all the way down to Restauradores, near Rossio, which is also one of Lisbon’s favorite Christmas shopping areas.
On this well-known Lisbon avenue, our favorite place was to spend a few hours at the Hard Rock Cafe, where we found a multitude of items dedicated to the music industry.
Christmas on Avenida de Roma
Avenida de Roma stretches from Praça de Londres to Avenida do Brasil. So there’ s no shortage of places to complete your Christmas gift list, such as Livraria Barata.
Open since 1957, Barata is located at number 11A on this avenue and defines itself as a tobacconist, stationery store and bookshop.
It is one of the literary spaces that has made a mark on the city, and several generations have nurtured their passion for literature here.
It’s now a Fnac store, but it still maintains all the tradition of the old stationery shop-bookshop.
Christmas on Avenida Guerra Junqueiro
Our last Christmas stop was on Avenida Guerra Junqueiro, where we passed one of our favorite places, the Bordallo Pinheiro store, with some of the most spectacular products by this famous ceramic artist.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this trip with us, just as we’ve enjoyed writing about it over the last few days.
All we can do is wish you a Merry Christmas and may the coming year be even better than the last one.
