Lisbon is increasingly committed to becoming an environmentally friendly city and, to this end, much has been contributed by the investment made in new cycle paths all over the city, as well as the plans to help people buy this sustainable means of transport.
But we’ll talk about these routes in another article. For now, we’d like to introduce you to the areas in Lisbon where you can go cycling with your family and children.
In these areas you’ll be able to cycle in complete safety, without the danger of the roads, near leisure areas where you can take a break for a drink of water or a snack. These are our 5 suggestions for your next family bike ride:
Parque das Nações
Parque das Nações is rich in areas where you can cycle without the danger of seeing cars crossing. With many green areas and spaces where you can rest, we’d venture to say that it’s in the eastern part of Lisbon that you’ll find one of the best places to take your family on a bike ride.
There’s just one thing you have to watch out for: other cyclists who have also chosen this part of the city for their evening or weekend rides.
Belém
Belém is also a very pleasant and, above all, safe place to go cycling with your family.
The roads are wide enough to avoid accidents with other cyclists or visitors to the city, and here you’ll also find some green areas and rest areas where you can relax between rides.
Take the opportunity to take pictures next to the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries or the MAAT, three of the capital’s major landmarks.
Parque Ribeirinho Oriente
This is one of Lisbon’s newest parks – we talked about it in this article – and it’s also quite safe if you want to take your family for a bike ride one of these weekends. Next to the Tagus and with various facilities for all ages (children’s playground and benches, among others), at Parque Ribeirinho Oriente you’ll find a short trail and, to relax, lots of green areas.
Take the opportunity to relax on one of the wooden benches and enjoy the Tagus in all its splendor.
Monsanto
The climb up to Monsanto can be a little longer and more tiring, but it will be well worth it once you enter the no-car zones, the perfect place to take a stroll and breathe in the fresh air that only this part of the city can provide.
We know that family travel logistics can be a real nightmare. Even so, avoid taking the car and take advantage of one of the Carris buses that take you to this park. The environment will thank you!
Vale da Montanha Urban Park
This park has practically everything you need for a weekend where cycling is also part of the family. In addition to the cycle path, it has many footpaths, green rest areas and even a children’s playground.
The paths where you can cycle in this park may have some steep climbs and descents, so we recommend that it is only used by families already experienced in this type of route.
