If you have one of those famous and “spacious” blue IKEA shopping bags—FRAKTA—at home, there’s a good chance it’s already been used to carry groceries, laundry, or items during a move.
This year, 2026, IKEA’s most famous “carry bag” turns 30 (it was launched in 1996) and is celebrating the occasion with a new version made from at least 90% recycled material.
And yes, you can already buy the 36- and 71-liter versions in stores across Portugal , as well as on the IKEA Portugal website.
It looks just like it always has, just like its ability to carry up to 25 kg and its low price of just 80 cents.
What will change in terms of the material?

Of the total recycled material, at least 70% is plastic that was previously used in the food packaging industry, such as industrial bags for powdered milk or food containers.
A small amount of pigment preserves the characteristic blue color, and a reduced proportion of virgin polypropylene ensures the necessary strength.
The body and handles are now made from a single material: recycled polypropylene. The bag is now produced using a fully automated process, which reduces waste and ensures more consistent quality.
In numbers, how does this sustainability translate?

With this change, IKEA will save enough material each year to circle the Earth almost twice— about 89,000 kilometers.
The leftover material from the factories is collected and returned to the production line to create new bags. These savings help IKEA offset the extra costs of processing, sorting, and quality control for recycled polypropylene, and that’s what allows them to maintain the current price.
We’d like to remind you that, as early as 2020, the FRAKTA was already made from 60% recycled material, and that figure has now increased to at least 90%.
What is one of IKEA’s best-selling items used for?

The blue FRAKTA bag is one of the Swedish brand’s best-selling items, with over 44 million units sold annually, making it IKEA’s best-selling furniture and home decor item worldwide.
In addition to bringing your groceries home, it’s great for carrying clothes, organizing spaces, sorting recyclables , or helping with moves— all while lasting for several years.
