Odivelas white marmalade is one of the most famous convent-style products in Greater Lisbon—and for good reason, as it is a specialty duly certified with a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), a distinction awarded by the European Commission. But this is just one of many products that will take center stage at the Odivelas Conventual — Sweets at the Monastery festival .
With free admission, from October 16 to 18, all roads lead to the Monastery of São Dinis and São Bernardo, better known as the Odivelas Monastery, where more than 30 producers of convent and traditional sweets from across the country, as well as eight local bakeries and producers from Odivelas, will be in attendance.
What to expect from Odivelas Conventual?
In addition to convent sweets, the festival will feature debates, cooking demonstrations, tastings, contests, children’s entertainment, dance, theater, and even a classical music performance by Cistermúsica on Friday evening, October 16, in the monastery’s church, as well as a concert by the Lisbon Film Orchestra, featuring a choir and soloists, on Saturday, October 17.
The Odivelas Conventual — Sweets at the Monastery event will also feature the participation of vocational schools in the tourism sector, the Loures and Odivelas Municipalities Commerce and Services Business Association, the Vocational Training Center for the Food Sector, the Portuguese Association of Hotels, Restaurants, and Related Businesses, and the Lisbon Region Tourism Board.
A Brief Look at the Odivelas Monastery
Designated a National Monument since 1910, the Odivelas Monastery was founded by King Dinis in the late 13th century and donated to the Bernardine nuns of the Cistercian Order, who managed this historic site for centuries. Today, it is described as “a museum under construction” because it hosts various cultural and scientific initiatives. In addition, it is the final resting place of the “Farmer” King, a nickname given to King Dinis.
