Anyone needing to travel between Cascais, Oeiras, and Lisbon this weekend should expect road closures. The EDP Lisbon Marathon takes place on Saturday, October 10, and the Hyundai Half Marathon on Sunday, October 11. The former starts in Carcavelos and follows the coastline to Lisbon; the latter begins on the Vasco da Gama Bridge. The finish line for both races is at Praça do Comércio.
Saturday: the marathon
The start is scheduled for 8 a.m. on the N6-7 in Carcavelos, in front of Nova SBE. The course covers 42.195 km along the seashore and then along the river, passing through the Estrada Marginal in Oeiras and the Lisbon waterfront, all the way to Praça do Comércio. The race has a time limit of six hours.
The checkpoints in Cascais
According to the municipality’s announcement, the first road closures will take place on Friday, October 9, between 8:00 a.m. and midnight, in the Carcavelos area: the Lombos Roundabout, the intersection of Rua das Amendoeiras and Avenida Tenente-Coronel Melo Antunes, the São Gonçalo Roundabout with the N6-7 Bypass, and the Marginal Roundabout with the N6-7 Bypass, next to the São Julião da Barra Fort.
On Saturday, from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Lombos Roundabout, the intersection of Rua das Amendoeiras, and the Estação Roundabout with Avenida Jorge V will be closed. Starting at 7 a.m., Avenida Marginal will be closed in both directions between the Nova SBE roundabout and the Auchan roundabout.
Starting at 7:30 a.m., road closures will extend to downtown Cascais: the Auchan Roundabout, Avenida 25 de Abril, the Comendador Joaquim Baraona Roundabout, Avenida da República, Avenida Rei Humberto II de Itália, Avenida D. Carlos I, Passeio D. Luís I, Alameda Combatentes da Grande Guerra, and the Marginal all the way to the Auchan Roundabout. The roads will gradually reopen after the last athlete has passed through. MobiCascais bus lines M38, M43, and M44 will also be affected.
Sunday: the half marathon
On Sunday, the race starts at 9: 20 a.m. on the Vasco da Gama Bridge. At the same time, the EDP 8K also begins; unlike the half marathon, it ends at Parque das Nações. Runners will board the organization’s buses in front of the Vasco da Gama Shopping Center, next to Gare do Oriente, between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., so the area will be bustling from very early on.
