If you still don’t know what to do in the next few days, here’s a suggestion: “Metaviolence”, a creation by João Pedro Fonseca – one of the founders of the ZABRA Artistic Center, comes to Lisbon from November 1st to 3rd, always starting at 7pm.
After visiting Lamego, the immersive show promises to awaken the senses and provoke debate. “Metaviolence” proposes a multidisciplinary performance that challenges the boundaries between art, technology and human consciousness… and all of this in an alternative universe.
With voice-overs from well-known Portuguese figures such as Albano Jerónimo and Mariana Monteiro, the narrative of “Metaviolence” comes to life in a hybrid and immersive performance. The show’s purpose is clear: to reflect the evolution of the relationship between humans and machines. Although the narrative is dystopian, the truth is that there is no shortage of thought-provoking links with the present day.

The dystopian universe of “Metaviolence”
Between projections, sounds and synchronized lighting, “Metaviolence” is anything but a boring performance. And this intense atmosphere transports the audience directly into the near future; a dystopian era where destructive instincts have been eradicated. Metaphorically, it seems the perfect setting for humanity to thrive. However, this is not the case.
Affected by a virus spread through the drug VIOL, humans lose their natural form of defense. As a result, they become fragile beings , unable to resist and on the verge of extinction. The solution found is METAVIOL – a device operated by an advanced machine dedicated to collecting the last remnants of humanity.

When violence is no longer physical…
Metaviolence stages a future where violence is not physical, but occurs in the way humans are reduced to data – extracted, exposed, cataloged. It’s a show about bodies that are no longer wounded, but read, that questions what’s left of humanity in a post-instinct world,” says João Pedro Fonseca, in the show’s synopsis.
In this context, the great tension to be explored navigates between two divergent but undoubtedly complementary spectra: the biological and the synthetic. In the end, violence is no longer reflected in physical aggression, but in the absence of choice.
