The swimming season is just around the corner, and the list of the country’s safest and cleanest beaches is already known, with the country earning 438 awards this year.
Every year, especially on weekends and during major holidays, the question is always the same: where can you lay out your towel with the assurance of a safe swim and no surprises regarding water quality? We already know the answer, which arrived with the official announcement from the Blue Flag Association for Environment and Education for 2026.
396 beaches, 21 marinas, and 21 ecotourism vessels

In 2026, Portugal will once again prove that the quality of its beaches and waters is well above excellent, having earned a total of 438 distinctions, distributed across 396 beaches, 21 marinas, and 21 ecotourism vesselsfrom north to south of the country and throughout the archipelagos.
We highlight, of course, the very positive attributes of the beaches closest to the capital, in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, which this year secured 35 Blue Flag beaches for the upcoming bathing season.
We’re talking about nearly four dozen beaches with strict guarantees not only regarding water quality, but also the cleanliness of surrounding areas, safety, and adequate support services.
