Located in the neighborhood of Mouraria, Velho Eurico is one of the tascas is one of the most typical and popular in Lisbon, and it’s even very difficult to book a table to taste the many traditional Portuguese delicacies served there.
The location of the small, quiet pasture house, which has just been mentioned in Condé Nast Traveler as one of the best 27 restaurants in Lisbon, was once an old charcoal kiln near the back of the São Cristóvão Church.
The story, very brief
It is said that Eurico was a young man from the province, who had been sent to Lisbon to work.
Living in Mouraria, he transformed this corner into a genuine Portuguese tavern for many years.
But the day of retirement came and, in 2018, the establishment passed into the hands of a group of young people, who took over the space, keeping the focus on traditional Portuguese cuisine, but with a more modern touch, to please all passers-by in one of the capital’s most multicultural neighborhoods.
The atmosphere… and the menu!
Warm and relaxed, at the O Velho Eurico tavern you have to knock on the door to get in and be served. The space is small, with capacity for around 40 people, spread over two rooms.
The wine list isn’t very extensive, but it’s pleasant… and the service is efficient and knows what it’s doing, so the conditions are in place for this small gastronomic spot to be a true phenomenon in the city, where the only regret is the extensive waiting list.
Zé Paulo Rocha, you who are the heart of this house, if you happen to read this article, see if you can find a “little corner” for Lisboa Secreta to make an informed review of your incredible tavern, which we are “sick” of hearing so many praises for.
