From his first appearance in The New Yorker at the hands of Charles Addams in 1938 to Tim Burton’s hit “Wednesday” on Netflix, many decades have passed. However, the dark eccentricity of this unconventional American family continues to enthral pop culture fans.
Now the black and white humor is brought back to life in the form of a play with the premiere of “The Addams Family – The Musical”, directed by Ricardo Neves-Neves, on stage at the Maria Matos Theatre in Lisbon from March 5 to May 4.
Wednesday falls in love with a ‘normal’ young man
Morticia and Gomez, their sons Wednesday and Pugsley , Uncle Fester and his grandmother, the butler Lurch and his helping hand Thing make up the Addams family and we grew up with their crazy antics, reflected in books, series and films. In 2010, the story reached Broadway, with a libretto by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa.
In Portugal, Força de Produção decided to bring the plot to the stage. And it all starts with Wednesday Addams falling in love with a kind and ‘normal’ young man. After confessing his new passion to his father, Gomez, he can’t resist sharing the news with his wife, Morticia, setting off a whole series of events.
All this serves as the basis for an unexpected and, to say the least, unusual encounter. The Addams family is joined by the traditional family of Wednesday’s boyfriend. Will the love of the two young people survive this family reunion?
