There are 10 new Mercadona supermarkets due to open in Portugal in 2025, but the big surprise is undoubtedly the long-awaited opening of not one, but two stores in the city of Lisbon.
The Spanish brand’s ambitious expansion plan thus consolidates its already vast presence in our country, ending the year with a network of 70 stores.
Where in Lisbon?
The first opening of 2025 is already scheduled for March, in Santa Iria da Azoia, which will be the first Mercadona store in the municipality of Loures , to be joined this year by a store in Frielas.
The long-awaited arrival in the city of Lisbon will happen later, with two locations: one in Alta de Lisboa, which will also host the company’s official offices in Portugal, and another in Quinta do Lambert.
And these will be the remaining seven locations of the new Mercadona supermarkets:
- Penafiel (Milhundos)
- Fafe
- Leiria (Vale Sepal)
- Matosinhos (São Gens)
- Palmela
- Porto (Amial)
Already hiring
The opening of new Mercadona supermarkets means the creation of new jobs. The Spanish company currently has around 7,000 employees in Portugal and has already started recruiting for various positions: supermarket operators, maintenance assistants and warehouse operators. All positions will include paid training from day one, as well as permanent contracts.
It should be noted that Mercadona is paying its employees around 23% more than the national minimum wage, starting at €14,963.90 gross per year and rising to €20,465.10 per year if they stay with the company for four years, as well as daily benefits and annual bonuses.
