The fascination with signature sandwiches is really in vogue; our guide takes you to some of the best in Lisbon, but on Sunday, March 22, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., you’ll be able to try a new sandwich that brings together the expertise of two culinary giants: Chef Nirmal Save of Gunpowder and Chef Leonor Godinho of Bibs Sandes.
This exclusive one-day event draws on the well-known concept of Indian restaurants (Breaking Eggs or Curry Nights), now creating this “Breaking Bread.”
First guest: Bibs Sandes

For this debut, Chef Nirmal Save invited the Bibs Sandes project , led by Chef Leonor Godinho. The result will be a head-to-head clash of flavors where Asian spices and local ingredients meet, literally, between two slices of bread.
On the Bibs Sandes side, the focus will be on the careful reinterpretation of street food classics, bringing three standout options to the event:
- Classic Reuben
- Sloppy Joe (toast-style)
- Mushroom Bun

As for Gunpowder’s Indian counterpart, Chef Nirmal Save will focus on creations that are authentic street food staples, with the restaurant’s unmistakable touch:
- Vada Pao (or Pav)
- Nagaland Pulled Duck
- Chettinad Duck Sandwich
- Tandoori Caesar Salad
Beyond the bread: sides and the Bloody Batra cocktail

The experience isn’t complete without ordering sides like platters of tandoori chicken wings and fries sprinkled with spices and dried tomato powder.
To cleanse the palate between bites, the highlight is the Bloody Batra (available with or without alcohol), a drink that pays homage to General Batra, a friend of the Gunpowder founder’s family. The key difference from a traditional Bloody Mary is the addition of ground Bengali mustard, which gives it a completely new aromatic profile.
