The year 2025 is getting closer and closer and, as far as public vacations are concerned , there are many good surprises: did you know that you can turn the usual 22 working days of vacation into many more days off? We’ll explain how in the next few lines!
It doesn’t happen very often, but next year we’re going to be lucky enough to make the most of the calendar to enjoy more days off, either through long weekends or bridges.
The fact is that of the 13 annual national holidays, 10 are on weekdays. And if we add the Lisbon holiday, on June 13, there’s one more to add to the list (11), since it falls on a Friday.
It really looks like the stars have aligned, doesn’t it? At Lisboa Secreta we’ve come up with a strategy that allows you to plan your next vacations, bridges and long weekends so that you can benefit from more days to rest and relax.

Make the most of 2025
The summer vacations are barely over and we’re already thinking about next year, aren’t we? Dreaming doesn’t pay any tax, so let’s dream about the vacations of 2025.
Regardless of the type of vacation you like to take, there’s one thing we’re all looking for , and that’ s to have as much time as possible to “switch off “ , relax and spend more time with “our” family and friends.
That’s why we’ve created this list of tips for making the most of the holidays in 2025. With the exception of Easter and the Implantation of the Republic, which both fall on a Sunday, and All Saints’ Day (on a Saturday), all the other holidays fall on weekdays.
Optimize your vacations for more days off
In our vacation planning for 2025, it’s important to note that when we talk about days off, we always count weekend days.
When we talk about vacations, we mean the usual 22 days that every worker is entitled to.
January
January 1st 2025 falls on a Wednesday. To enjoy 5 days off, you only need to take 2 days off: Thursday, January 2, and Friday, January 3, returning to work on Monday , January 6 . Happy New Year!
April and May
Because of the April 25 holiday, which falls on a Monday, this is a golden opportunity! Take 8 days off, between April 21 and May 2, and enjoy 16 days off. That is, from the Friday holiday (Good Friday), April 18, to Sunday, May 4, thus taking advantage of three holidays in three different weeks.
June
June has arrived and with it the start of summer, but also the Santos Populares in Lisbon. June can be divided into two distinct phases :
- If you work in Lisbon, you can take advantage of these 16 days off with only 7 vacation days, taking June 9, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18 and 20 off, since the 10th (Portugal Day), 13th (St. Anthony’s Day) and 19th (Corpus Christi) are public holidays;
- If you don’t enjoy the Lisbon vacation, you can enjoy the same 16 days off, but you have to take an extra day off , which will be the Lisbon municipal holiday, which takes place on Friday, June 13.
August
Since there are no holidays for anyone in July, August comes with another option, the 15th (Assumption of Our Lady), which falls on a Friday, meaning a long weekend. Here, our suggestion is that you take the opportunity to add another day by taking the Thursday before or the Monday after, turning the 3 into 4 days off.
December
There’s nothing for anyone in September, October and November either ! So that leaves December and the holidays of the 1st (Restoration of Independence), the 8th (Immaculate Conception) and the 25th (Christmas), the first two on a Monday and the last on a Thursday. You can also take advantage of these days in two different ways:
- In the first week you can take 4 days off (from December 2 to 5) and enjoy 9 days off, from November 29 to December 7;
- In the last week, you can also ask for 4 days off (December 22, 23, 24 and 26) and get the same 9 days off, from December 20 to 28.
