Lisbon is preparing to host a unique and distinctive show, “Organismo by Maraña”, which stands out for being an immersive and multi-sensory performance in an authentic patchwork of wool.
When you see this show, which will only have six sessions in Lisbon, at the iconic Carpintarias de São Lázaro, over four days, between May 15 and 18, you’ll be treated to an innovative, sensory and deeply immersive artistic experience, where you’ll be invited to explore new ways of feeling, interacting and even being part of a magical collective universe.
But what is Maraña?
Maraña is an experiential space, it is a specific interdisciplinary installation that combines contemporary circus, movement theater as well as performance, having grown in Berlin since 2018.
Therefore, Maraña is not a person, but a unique and innovative artistic project created and executed by a team that stands out for mixing different languages and forms of expression in a visually striking experience.
The name Maraña came from a family joke: when she showed the first crochet wall she built, her daughter called it “mamá araña” (mother spider), and so the project’s name was born, symbolizing the fusion between crochet and the idea of a web.
“Organismo” in Lisbon
“Organismo” is Maraña’s most recent production, which premiered in 2022 and has been shown dozens of times in the United States and Europe. Now it’s coming to Lisbon, more specifically to Carpintarias de São Lázaro, in the Mouraria neighborhood.
The immersive show was created by Chilean artist and circus arts director Paula Riquelme, also known as Lapaulari , who drew on her more than 20 years of experience to transform the set into a giant crocheted wool tapestry, which will merge with the five performers in a choreography of interdependence, which functions as a collective unit: an organism.
The artistic direction of the show “Organismo” is signed by Majda Amroun, co-founder of Haize , and practically the entire production is female, from the five artists to DJs Kotoe and Anya, who also take part in the event by inserting musical excerpts, as well as playing a leading role in the party on the penultimate day of screenings in Lisbon (Saturday 17th at 22:30).
Total immersion
What you’ll experience in “Organismo by Maraña” is truly immersive, in a multicolored setting where the artists mix and intertwine thousands of strands of wool in a completely crocheted installation, creating a visually incredible and mesmerizing environment.
The music, which will also be part of the 60-minute act, plays a very important role, as it intensifies the sense of immersion you’ll feel throughout the show.
At the end, after the sessions, especially on May 17, you can also socialize and interact directly with the lanuda wall, as well as with the artists, who will be dressed to the nines so that you can feel their “second skin”.
