About 40 minutes from Lisbon, at Praia das Maçãs, there is a saltwater pool complex that remains one of the most popular summer getaways from the heat.
Part of the Sintra Sol development, the Praia das Maçãs Ocean Pools are open every year from June 1 through September 15, with the ocean right next door.
Two pools, with water directly from the sea
The complex has two saltwaterpools: one Olympic-sized, with slides and a diving area, and another smaller one, designed for younger children. Surrounding the pools is a grassy area with lounge chairs, a bar, and a restaurant for a light meal between dips.
By historic tram or by car
In addition to driving from Lisbon, there’s a more picturesque way to get there: the historic Sintra tram, which connects the town of Sintra to Praia das Maçãs on a 40- to 45-minute ride along a line that’s over a century old , winding between the mountains and the sea.
Prices vary depending on the time of day
Admission prices vary depending on age, the day of the week, and the time of arrival: starting in the late afternoon, tickets are cheaper, with prices starting at €3 for children. On weekends, prices tend to be higher than on weekdays.
