Traces of what appears to be a new Roman temple have been found at Rua da Saudade in Lisbon, more specifically in a garage at number 6 of this street , at a depth of just 50 centimeters.
The garage, which is next to the Roman Theater, which is a site of great archaeological importance, not only for the city but for the whole world, was being explored by a team from the Museum of Lisbon, who consistently carry out excavations near this must-visit site in the city.
According to the Público newspaper, the flooring found in this Roman temple is of the opus sectile type, a rare technique in our country that involves the use of slabs of marble and other stone materials cut into geometric shapes in order to create ornamental compositions.
This type of flooring is so rare that one of the only known preserved examples is in the Roman Theater itself.
This discovery is very important because it is the first with archaeological evidence, although several Roman temples are known to have existed in ancient Felicitas Iulia Olisipo, today known as Lisbon.
According to the same media outlet, it is known that the owner of the property, in collaboration with the Museum of Lisbon, has adapted the space in order to preserve these Roman structures, with the prospect of this historical find being musealized.
On one of our visits to the Open House Archaeology event in 2023, remains dating back to the first century were also found in this part of the city . It’s all documented in this video.
