Who wakes up earlier? The city or the metro? We may be close to having a new answer to this question. Metropolitano de Lisboa announced a pilot project to test opening stations one hour earlier than usual, at 5:30 a.m. The announcement was made on June 23 by Cristina Vaz Tomé, chair of the company’s Board of Directors, with the aim of adapting transportation services to Lisbon’s new mobility needs.
Trials in October, a new reality in 2027
The project is still in the planning phase, and the operational details remain to be defined. What is already known is that testing is expected to begin in October 2026. If the results are positive, the plan is to adopt the new 5:30 a.m. schedule permanently starting in January 2027.
For now, there is no confirmation as to whether the new schedule will also cover weekends. This detail will depend, for the time being, on the results of the pilot program.
A city that doesn’t stop at 6:30 a.m.
Lisbon has been growing as a tourist destination, a city with a vibrant nightlife, and a hub of international attraction, and the pressure on public transportation in the early morning hours is increasing. Bringing forward the metro’s opening hours is part of a strategy to respond to urban mobility patterns that no longer fit the standards of the past.
Currently, the Lisbon Metro opens at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays and closes at 1:00 a.m. The proposed change would add an extra hour of service at the start of the day, with no announced change to the closing time.
