Traveling back in time is a fantasy shared by many people. But since we can’t step into a time machine, we’re left with fictional audiovisual productions and, of course, historical reenactments. At a time when “House of the Dragon, ” the famous HBO Max series, is keeping many fans glued to their screens, just about an hour from Lisbon, it will be possible to step back centuries in a truly immersive way.
Amid songs of adventure, the exploits of brave knights, and mysterious dances, the Óbidos Medieval Market returns from July 16 to 26 with a program packed with activities and entertainment. This year, the organizers take us on a journey back to the 14th century to tell the story of D. Leonor Teles, queen consort of D. Fernando ( 1370–1385), who assumed the regency of the kingdom after her husband’s death during a particularly turbulent period.
From the Raid to the New Ticketing System
As in previous years, one of the highlights of the program is the show “Assault on the Castle,” which will take place daily in the late evening within the walled enclosure. In addition, there are other key events such as the “Royal Tribune” —a stage dedicated to dance, theater, and music—and the Tournament of Intrigue.
According to the newspaper “Gazeta das Caldas, ” for this year’s edition, the organizers have also introduced new themed areas, as well as a new ticketing system with staggered entry times to prevent crowds from gathering.
Taverns, street performers, and more
To help visitors truly experience an immersive journey through time, Óbidos’ setting—worthy of a period film—plays a role, but the wide array of activities on offer is also key . So, there will be no shortage of:
- Falconry demonstrations
- Taverns and fire shows
- Military and Civilian Camp
- Stunt performers, acrobats, and jugglers.
