Stalls filled with traditional Portuguese ceramics, featuring shapes ranging from enormous red fish to cabbages, strawberries, tomatoes, and lemons, are capturing the attention of visitors at the Feira da Luz.
This historic Lisbon event, held at Largo da Luz in Carnide, runs through September 27 and stands out this year for the strong presence and high demand for these affordable pottery pieces .
Variety of shapes
The main attraction for many visitors to the fairgrounds is the booths dedicated to ceramics, where tableware in bright colors and unusual shapes abounds.
On the tables and in the crates, there are piles of cabbage-shaped tureens with intricate details, stacked plates featuring illustrations of zebras and elephants, olive oil cruets, salt shakers, and dinnerware sets that mimic purple lotus leaves and flowers. This is an opportunity to find both utilitarian and decorative tableware bearing the hallmark of Brazilian craftsmanship.
Special offers
To attract customers and move inventory, the various vendors scattered throughout the venue are running promotional campaigns, clearly displayed on large posters at their stalls.
Among the available offerings, signs stand out advertising sets of three plates or three items of your choice for 10 euros, two items for 5 euros, and even areas where any selected item costs 5 euros.
The atmosphere on site reflects a true bargain hunt, with dozens of visitors “rummaging” through boxes and stacks of plates in search of the most original pieces to refresh their household items.
Our experience
The combination of these special offers allows visitors to put together varied sets at very low total prices.
A sample of the items available for purchase at the fair illustrates the cost of our visit: we bought a pineapple-shaped salt shaker for 9 euros, along with three traditional plates with blue rims and reddish backgrounds for 3.50 euros each , two small, classically painted earthenware jars —ideal for serving olives or cheese— for 1.50 euros each, as well as two bowls shaped like a strawberry and a cabbage, priced at 2.50 euros each as part of a “two for 5 euros” promotion.
The total cost of this entire set of utility tableware comes to 27.50 euros. The final tally of these purchases confirms the Carnide fair as an essential stop for acquiring colorful Portuguese ceramics, combining the tradition of classic shapes with attractive prices until the event’s closing on September 27.
