Did you know that Lisbon is one of the cities worldwide with the highest number of tourists compared to local residents? According to a ranking compiled by the global car rental comparison website DiscoverCars.com, the Portuguese capital ranks 8th among destinations with the most tourists per 100 local residents.
The global top ten
According to information shared by the DiscoverCars website , in addition to Lisbon, there is another Portuguese city in the top 10 of the global ranking, namely Porto:
- Dubrovnik – Croatia
- Reykjavík – Iceland
- Venice – Italy
- Geneva – Switzerland
- Porto – Portugal
- Phuket – Thailand
- Florence – Italy
- Lisbon – Portugal
- Edinburgh – Scotland
- Athens – Greece
The methodology used

To arrive at these results, DiscoverCars used Euromonitor’s “Top 100 City Destinations 2025” report to select the cities and relied on government sources to obtain population data, which was then cross-referenced with the number of international tourists who visited those cities in 2025.
After that, the cities were ranked in descending order based on the number of tourists compared to the number of local residents. Additionally, DiscoverCars estimated how much it would cost to rent a car between April 13 and 19, using its own internal data.
Cities with the fewest tourists
Conversely, DiscoverCars also sought to identify the cities with the lowest tourist traffic worldwide , relative to the number of local residents:
- Cairo – Egypt
- Jakarta – Indonesia
- São Paulo – Brazil
- Mexico City – Mexico
- Tokyo – Japan
Althoughthese destinations have “low” numbers of international tourists relative to the local population, this does not mean they are synonymous with tranquility, as they are cities with high population densities.
