LGBT Pride Parades are a series of affirmative action events for the LGBT+ community, which celebrate the pride and culture of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, and sometimes other groups typically linked to the LGBT+ community, such as intersex people.
The events take place annually around the world during the month of June, which is considered LGBT+ Pride month.
Many people don’t know why June was chosen as the month for these events, but the answer is simple: it’s due to the demonstrations that took place on June 8, 1969, in the United States.
According to history, the Stonewall Rebellion was a series of violent and spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBT community against a New York police raid , which took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn bar, located in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York, in the United States.
These riots are widely regarded as the most important event that led to the modern gay liberation movement and the fight for LGBT rights in the country. They attracted a crowd that was incited to riot.
Tensions between the NYPD and the gay residents of Greenwich Village erupted into more protests the following night, and again on several subsequent nights. Within weeks, residents of the neighborhood organized activist groups to focus their efforts on establishing places that gays and lesbians could frequent without fear of arrest.
After the Stonewall riots, several gay rights organizations were founded in many states in the United States and the rest of the world. On June 28, 1970, the first gay pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago to commemorate the anniversary of the riots.
Similar marches were organized in other cities and today LGBT parades are held annually around the world as a way of commemorating the achievements made at Stonewall.
In Lisbon, the 22nd LGBTI+ Pride March is scheduled to take place on Avenida da Liberdade on June 19 at 6pm.
“Unconfirm rights, remove prejudices” is the motto of the parade, which recalls a year marked by increased job insecurity and discrimination against various minorities.
