On Avenida da Índia, next to the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB), is Lisbon’s newest museum , the Julião Sarmento Pav ilion, dedicated to the well-known Portuguese artist.
Inaugurated on June 4, 2025, the new cultural space will host a diverse program that combines visual arts, cinema, performance and other artistic expressions, reflecting the experimental spirit that always marked Julião Sarmento’s career.
Around 1,200 works
At the Julião Sarmento Pavilion you’ll find 1,200 works, ranging from those created by the artist from his youth in the 1960s to his more experimental creations.
Among the vast collection you’ll be able to admire paintings, videos, sculptures and installations, projects that marked the life of this artist.
In addition to this collection, the new Pavilhão Julião Sarmento museum will also exhibit works by national and international figures, especially authors who had a close connection with the Portuguese artist: Andy Warhol, Marcel Duchamp, Nan Goldin, Miquel Barceló, Marina Abramovic, Jorge Molder, Rui Chafes, Bruce Nauman, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Cindy Sherman, among others.
The new museum offers three large exhibition halls, spread over three floors, and admission is free until June 8.
The building, which was once the Blue Pavilion
Formerly known as the Blue Pavilion, this building was an old food warehouse, speculated to have been built at the end of the 19th century, and was vacant until the start of construction.
It was the target of a rehabilitation project signed by the architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça, and the artistic direction is now in the hands of the curator Isabel Carlos, chosen by a specialized jury to lead the new contemporary art center in Belém.
It is also known that the creation of this cultural space was the wish of the artist, who died in 2021, who wanted to donate his estate to the city, thus founding another art space.
This opening will be just one more milestone in the cultural history of our capital, while at the same time paying homage to one of Portugal ‘s most international artists. Happy visiting!
