After a six-year hiatus, Jazz na Praça is back in Penha de França. The festival, now in its eleventh edition, returns on September 5, 12, and 19, with three free concerts at Praça Paiva Couceiro—this time, with a lineup featuring exclusively female artists.
Three nights, three ways to experience jazz
The festival opens on September 5 with Laura Garcia y Los Cafeteros del Swing, which blends swing-era standards with the rhythms of gypsy jazz, creating a more festive and danceable sound. Next, on September 12, Bia Souza and o Bando da Lua take the stage—a project by the Brazilian singer-songwriter who, alongside trumpeter Micael Pereira, blends Brazilian, African, and Portuguese influences—a concert built around the language and music shared by Portuguese-speaking countries. The series concludes on September 19 with the Carolina Estrela Trio, which explores the voice as an instrument through the wordless technique, in a more intimate style rooted in contemporary jazz.
A square with a history
Over the course of its ten previous editions, the festival has hosted artists such as Maria João, Lena d’Água, and Manuel João Vieira, fostering a close relationship between musicians and the residents of Penha de França. The original concept remains the same for this edition: to take jazz out of concert halls and bring it back to public spaces, without tickets limiting who can attend.
